Walking, Rambling and Rock Climbing
The extensive network of rural footpaths in this district offer fantastic outings on foot. There are many routes to choose from along ancient and much travelled mule tracks providing a unique experience whatever the time of year.
Route 1- Las Lomas de Miraflores.
This route offers a splendid open landscape and takes you through the Alcorrín
valley, which is the location of a castle archaeological site from the end
of the bronze age.
Route 2 – La Cuesta del Molino.
This trail follows the old footpath to Casares and leads to the river. This
historic route takes in the old wine cellar ‘Cortijo de Linares’ the little
mill ‘Ingenio Chico’ built by the Duke of Arcos, and impressive views of
the aqueduct, which carried the water needed to drive the machinery for
the sugar mill. The foundations of the 17th century mill are virtually intact
as are some of the walls and the aqueduct itself. The route then takes you
upstream to the ‘Charca de la Mina’ bathing area, past an old dove cote
and a chapel to the Hedionda Spa baths with its abundance of vegetation.
Route 3 – Canuto de Utrera.
Retracing your steps back along the path you follow the watercourse to the
gorge known as ‘Canuto de Utrera’. There are many caves here with one, ‘Gran
Duque’, holding prehistoric remains.
Route 4 – Castillo de la Duquesa.
This walk starts from the castle and stretches along the coast to ‘Chullera’.
The path from the ‘Loma de Negro’ takes us inland with the mountains and
Gibraltar visible in the distance. Small fortresses and watchtowers stand
looking out to sea.
Rock Climbing
Manilva’s location and rocky landscape makes it the perfect location to practise climbing and enjoy the two official rock-climbing sites, the ‘Cañon de Manilva’.
